At its meeting on 18 October 2017, the Federal Council set the level and date for the entry into force of the radio and television fee.

According to the Federal Council's press release of 18 October 2017, the new radio and television levy, which was approved by the people in June 2015, will be introduced on 1 January 2019. From this date, all Swiss households will contribute one franc per day or 365 francs per year (currently 451 francs per year) to the financing of the SRG and the regional radio and television stations.

Persons living in a collective household (e.g. in a retirement home, nursing home or student residence) no longer have to pay an individual tax. In these cases, a total levy of CHF 730 is charged directly to the collective household. Persons who receive supplementary benefits to AHV/IV continue to be exempt from the levy.

In addition, the Federal Council has confirmed that companies with an annual turnover of less than CHF 500,000 will not be subject to the levy. For the other companies, a progressive tariff will apply, based on their turnover.
