On May 15, 2024, the Federal Council set out its position on the popular initiative "For a social climate policy - fairly financed through taxation (Initiative for a future)". It is of the opinion that the initiative is not a suitable means of achieving Switzerland's climate targets. With the introduction of an inheritance tax on very high assets and the earmarking for financing climate policy, it sets the wrong incentives. It interferes with the federal system and reduces Switzerland's attractiveness for wealthy individuals.
The Federal Council therefore intends to recommend that Parliament reject the initiative without a counter-proposal.
