The canton of Zurich is strengthening Zurich as a foundation location: the tax office is adapting its practice on tax exemption for charitable foundations. In doing so, the canton is implementing a key measure of the initiative to strengthen Zurich as a foundation location and is improving the framework conditions for a modern and effective foundation system.
At the beginning of 2023, the cantonal government decided to make the canton of Zurich more attractive for foundations. An adjustment to the practices of the cantonal tax office will promote a modern and effective foundation system.
There is now nothing to prevent the appropriate remuneration of foundation board members of charitable foundations from being tax-exempt. In addition, charitable activities abroad are measured according to the same standards as activities in Switzerland. This will allow the canton of Zurich to increasingly attract internationally active foundations to the canton.
