On 9 and 10 September 2021, Federal Councillor Alain Berset was in London to sign the new social security agreement between Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

Since the United Kingdom's withdrawal from the EU on 01 January 2021, relations under social security law are no longer governed by the Agreement on the Free Movement of Persons between Switzerland and the EU, although entitlements already acquired continue to be guaranteed in principle. In order to regulate social security relations again in a targeted and comprehensive manner, the two states have negotiated a new bilateral agreement.

The agreement is to be applied provisionally as soon as possible. It will enter into force definitively as soon as the parliaments of both states have approved it.
