On 16 October 2020, Federal Councillor Ueli Maurer met with the Cantonal Government of Ticino and informed about the latest exchange with the Italian Ministry of Finance on the agreement with Italy on the taxation of cross-border commuters.
Switzerland and Italy initialled a new agreement in December 2015 to replace the existing agreement from 1974. In future, cross-border commuters will in principle be taxed in both the country of employment and the country of residence. The agreement has not yet been signed. However, the aim is to sign it soon.
