On August 12, 2026, the Federal Council approved the message regarding the temporary increase in the value-added tax.

The Federal Council wants to strengthen Switzerland's security and defense and, to that end, increase the value-added tax.

The increase in the value-added tax is scheduled to take effect in 2028 and last for 12 years. The standard rate is set to rise by 0.5 percentage points for a limited time, and the special rate by 0.3 percentage points.

The message is available here, the federal law here, and the report here.
